About Us
Hello! I'm Kristin Fields Mauer, designer of The UGLY BAG. Here's the scoop.... I'm addicted to thrift stores & I'm not afraid to admit it! Point me in the direction of an awesome Salvation Army, Goodwill or the local second-hand shop & I'll ravage the joint! But I don't limit my treasure seeking to just shops. I love a good yard sale, auction or even a free trash bag of hand-me-downs too! Not only can I find great prices on gently used clothing & other crazy cool jazz for my entire family, but I can also feel fantastic because I'm RECYCLING!
Not long ago I was standing in my favorite thrift store in Ocean Springs, MS looking around at the sea of color that surrounded me. I found myself taking a closer look at the vibrant colors, the intricate patterns & the plethora of textures of each shirt, skirt, dress or blanket that I came across. More often then not I found myself thinking... "What an ugly garment! No wonder somebody didn't want to put it on their body!" That's when I began to ponder what happens to all of the fabric if nobody eventually claims it! I started to do some research and found that the average person discards over 68 pounds of clothing & textiles per year! That's a lot of ugly threads folks!
After a while, I realized that although not ALL of the clothing was totally hip & stylish, the fabrics & patterns were really quite amazing! In fact, I began to see that most of the fabrics wouldn't be nearly as UGLY if they weren't used to create a hideous 1970's moo-moo or a frighteningly close resemblance to a "Little House on the Prairie" dress complete with matching bonnet. With that in mind, the very first UGLY BAG was created! The UGLY BAG is a funky and stylish way to give a GREEN gift to a friend or a whimsical way to simply express your own commitment to conservation!
